Finding your niche; a seemingly daunting task for many wanting to become an influencer or content creator. Where to even begin? How can I be original in this day and age? Everything has already been done… Well, here’s some motivation for you. In 1899, Charles H. Duell (Commissioner of the US Patent Office at the time) stated,
Everything that can be invented has been invented.
Imagine if everyone believed this for evermore! There’d be:
No internet or speech-to-text. No supercars or electric guitars. No touchscreens, video streams or flying machines! An important reflection to consider when finding your niche is that the world is ever-evolving and there’s no need to feel the pressure of reinventing the wheel. So now we’ve got that out of the way…
What is a niche?
Your niche could be considered your area within an overall category of content or even the category your content fits into. This could be: Beauty, Fitness, Finance, Gaming, Lifestyle, Photography, Vlogs – the list is endless (and many of these can be found on the Slink Homepage)! If you want to know how to become an influencer, the first place to start your journey is finding your niche.
At Slink, we think in order to become an influencer you need to create content which adds value. Whether that’s value to you, to your audience, to the world or (hopefully) all of the above!
Why do I need to have a niche?
A niche lets audience’s know what to expect when experiencing your content. It gives you focus. It enables you to carve out your own area of the internet and develop your personal brand in order to become an influencer in your chosen area.
“Okay… so how do I go about finding a niche?”
Well, what are your current interests and who inspires you?
This is a great place to start. What do you like doing? Note, this doesn’t necessarily translate to ‘what you are (currently) good at’. Absolutely capitalise on your natural talents, with the caveat of asking yourself, ‘Do I enjoy this?’. Without getting too altruistic… Surely you want to be creating content around a topic that you yourself enjoy? Well – write down the things that you do enjoy! What makes you tick? Is there anything where you get into a ‘flow state’ and you don’t realise the passing of time? Who’s content do you find inspiring? What is it about their content that captivates you? Ask yourself these questions, jot a few ideas down and crack on with the rest of the blog.
You don’t know what you don’t know
Try, try, try again. And no, I’m not trying to be some pushy school gym teacher. Throw yourself into new opportunities! Not only will these experiences help you know what you like and what you dislike, it’s a catalyst for new ideas. Grab a book from a library or spend a few pounds on one. Is a potential brand-new idea or different lens of looking at the world worth your time and a few pennies? We think so. Welcome new experiences or even, to borrow from YesTheory; seek discomfort.
We’ve never had as rich a resource of content & information and it’s never been so accessible.
One man’s trash…
A common misconception is the only way to become an influencer is to document your luxury lifestyle by travelling the world and having awesome experiences. Well, we’re here to let you know you don’t need to do that to become an influencer. There genuinely will be something in your life that could be your unique selling point and help you discover your niche. Can you use your location to your advantage? Could you nurture your natural talent? Maybe you can speak another language? The world has so many unique cultures, traditions, quirks and oddities.
What’s something in your life that you could share with the world?
Everyone starts somewhere
And it does not have to be perfect. It doesn’t even have to be good! If you scroll back to any content creator’s first video, first blog or first post you can see their own progression to become an influencer and the journey they have experienced. It’s very easy to be put off by exceptionally polished content creators with millions of followers. Once upon a time, they too created an account which had no posts and no followers… It’s all about taking that first step.
Document your exploration
Slink recommends Austin Kleon’s ‘Show Your Work‘ as a great resource to get you in the right mindset to put yourself out there into the world.
You should use this time of documenting to amass and improve your own skills. Whether that be video editing, script writing, blog researching, copywriting, photography or speaking to the camera, there’s a wealth of skills needed and ones which you can work on along your way.
Find your people
Finding like-minded content creators in your niche is a sure fire way to rocket boost your journey to become an influencer. Immersing yourself with the latest trends and positive conversations and challenging discussions will enable you to become an expert in your niche and make connections. An excellent resource for this is Discord. Would you look at that, we’ve got communities built-in to Slink’s Discord! Take a peek.
Who cares anyway!
Finally, many people don’t take the first step because they’re too focused on the top of the mountain, whether that be the skill and time it will take to get there or being afraid of what close friends and family may think. We say; who cares.
Finding your niche is all about being creative, experimenting freely, throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. Don’t be afraid to try.
Connecting to a worldwide audience will take time and the person who starts their journey to become an influencer will be a very different person to the budding content creator in a few months time.
If you want to become an influencer, then putting your own work out there for the first time is one of the hardest steps. Good luck. And of course, we’re here if you need.
